Oregano oil targets prostate cancer
Nanoemulsion and Encapsulation Strategy of Hydrophobic Oregano Essential Oil Increased Human Prostate Cancer Cell Death via Apoptosis by Attenuating Lipid Metabolism.
Highly relevant to prostate cancer
We explored the potential of oregano essential oil (EO) in combating prostate cancer, particularly focusing on its hydrophobic properties. By synthesizing and characterizing a nanoemulsion of oregano essential oil (OENE), we aimed to reveal how it might impact human prostate cancer cells, specifically the PC3 cell line.

Our tests showed that OENE has a significant effect on prostate cancer cells, demonstrating a half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC) of 13.82 g/mL. We observed distinct changes in the cancer cells, including shrinkage and reduction in cell density and shape. Fascinatingly, we found that OENE also decreased the accumulation of lipid droplets in these cells, which is linked to cancer progression.

We further analyzed key genes involved in lipid metabolism and apoptosis. The treatment showed reduced expression of genes associated with lipid biogenesis, such as HMGCR and FASN, while significantly increasing the expression of pro-apoptotic markers like BAX and caspase 3. Conversely, the levels of BCL2, known for promoting cell survival, were decreased. This complex interplay suggests that OENE could trigger apoptosis in cancer cells, making it a promising candidate for prostate cancer therapy.

Overall, our findings indicate that oregano essential oil nanoemulsion could serve as a valuable therapeutic approach for treating prostate cancer. Further in vivo studies are warranted to solidify these initial positive results.

Carvacrol impacts prostate cancer cells
Carvacrol Induces Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS)-mediated Apoptosis Along with Cell Cycle Arrest at G/G in Human Prostate Cancer Cells.
Direct effects on prostate cancer
We delved into how carvacrol, a key compound in oregano, impacts prostate cancer cells. Our research demonstrated that when we treated DU145 prostate cancer cells with carvacrol, there was a notable decrease in cell viability over both time and increased concentrations of the compound. This suggests that carvacrol may effectively hinder the growth of prostate cancer cells.

We observed some interesting mechanisms behind this effect. The treatment led to apoptosis—or programmed cell death—which we confirmed through signs like nuclear condensation and caspase-3 activation. Additionally, carvacrol increased the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and disrupted the mitochondrial membrane potential, both crucial factors in the process of cell death in cancer.

Another significant finding was that carvacrol caused a considerable cell cycle arrest specifically at the G2/G1 phase. This indicates that carvacrol not only kills cancer cells but also halts their proliferation by preventing them from progressing in the cell cycle. Overall, our study highlights the potential for carvacrol as a complementary treatment option for prostate cancer, providing hope that regular consumption of oregano could contribute to slowing the disease's progression in patients.

Lowered PSA score
Oregano oil combined with pomegranate juice, taken daily, effectively lowered my PSA score from a rising 4.7 to 4.2, impressing my doctor. This prevented the need for a needle biopsy. It has proven effective for me, and I highly recommend it for anyone considering treatment options for prostate cancer.
